[Hey Mizuki, guess what? There's a box of cookies for you, that's signed by Rin, that comes with a little note.] Mizuki, I made you these cookies! You seemed a bit sad when we first met, so I hope these will cheer you up. Feel free to come and talk to me whenever you want to.
[ Sometime that evening, Mizuki finds her way back to their room at the inn. She's not entirely paying attention, so she nearly kicks the box as she's about to open their door, but she sure is glad she didn't! Looking down the hall, she doesn't see anything at any other doors, so she doesn't think she can blame the Aldrip locals for this one.
When she takes the box into the room, she realizes she is alone for now. Her expression brightens despite herself as she reads the note, and she's taken a seat on their couch as she goes.
A moment later, Mizuki is fiddling with her charm. It'd probably be easier to just march over to Rin's room, but she's gotta get used to using this thing sometime.
She thinks it's ringing? And once she hears the sound of Rin picking up, she'll speak casually like one would into a phone. It's a voice call. ]
[Oh, she wasn't expecting a call. She perks up when she gets the call, and immediately recognizes the girl's voice on the other end. She sounds just as excited as when she first met Mizuki.]
This is Rin! Hi, Mizuki! Did you get the cookies I made you?
[You can practically feel her smile and excitement over the phone.]
[By the time Saito returned to their shared inn room, Mizuki appeared to be fast asleep. What transpired earlier that night must have taken a toll on her, and not only in the physical sense; if her sense of responsibility for the safety of the two orphan piglets is anything to go by.
How nice it must be to feel that guilt.
Issues with some nosy girl's intervention aside, at the end of that night, Saito still got what he needed for his short term plan. Namely, the altered piece of indestructible paper he is about to show his new roommate. While his entrance into the room was made with careful quietness, the same can't be said about the way he approaches the sleeping girl and—]
I thought long and hard about how unfair I was to you when we agreed to show our parchments. Now I see it was a stupid prank, sorry for tricking you there.
[But contrary to the half-apologetic (and half-mocking) words, he's holding up his altered parchment, unfolded, for her to marvel at it. Trying to seem smug and a hopeless loser — at the same time. In other words, how the real Date would sound like.]
[The last message follows immediately after the third, showing a recording of one corner of a deserted back alley somewhere in Aldrip. The focus moves downwards, to a young stray kitten looking up expectantly from its sitting spot. Its mouth is moving, chewing on something. A small, now empty bowl sits in front of it.
But instead of more food, what it gets is a single bullet to the head, before it drops to the side, unmoving.]
[ If he knows where she's been hiding them (and she doesn't know why he wouldn't), he hasn't said anything about it. Somedays, it would take longer than most to find them. They are curious. They wander, but she'd always been able to find them before long. There are other safe spaces that she's found to hide them, and eventually, they learn their way, but in the end, she always checked the cave first.
She knows he is still messing with her. The texts and voice messages were easy to ignore, an irritation at best. This was not.
Her breathing is fast, and her anxiety is high. There's the familiar feeling of bile rising from the pit of her stomach and up her throat, but it doesn't quite make it. Is this her fault?
But a voice manages to sound in her head. He doesn't have that power over you. ]
[ It's been a weird fucking month, and that's saying something by Blackbeard's standards. He looks comparatively wide-eyed and frazzled from the last time they met. ]
You alive, girl?
[ Because like, he's not stupid enough to go back to the farm in person to check, but he does wonder about her, and her pigs, and her wizard. ]
Did you see that shit out in the forest with its little wriggly root arms worming into town? Was it your man behind that fucking weird thing?
[ Oh, this guy. Mr. "For realsies." She kind of hates that she remembers that, and he does look a bit rattled after everything, but she can't say she can blame him. She considers her social battery and whether she has enough left to have this conversation, and begrudgingly, she apparently decides that she does.
Only via voice from her end, though. ]
Hey.
[ A pause, but then she remembers he asked several follow up questions. ]
I'm alive. [ She doesn't comment on the monster, whose cries she still hears at night. She adds, almost with offense to her voice: ] ...What man?
[ The tablet is way more familiar to her than the charm in terms of use, so Mizuki is all too happy to make the switch. The charm still remains on her wrist as an accessory, however, though it's somewhat ignored. She's not expecting much by way of messages, so it comes as a bit of a surprise.
The name, naturally, makes her raise an eyebrow, but when she opens the picture, it comfirms what she already expected. ]
nice fireworks. that supposed to be me?
[ Ugh. Vague memories flash in her mind where she is tightly strapped to a table, squirming to get out. The air is putrid and it's hard to breathe. But the moment passes quickly. ]
delivery.

Also, what is this boomer voice-to-text shit? She is fiddling, as always, but try as she might, there still doesn't seem to be a keyboard function. ]
Yeah, Sekiba High. Why?

Ah good.
What sort of things did you learn there? Was there anything boring that you didn't think was necessary?

I don't think I ever got the chance to thank you yet. For choking and leaving me unconscious in the cave that day.
[2/4] wait, actually make that 4!
Since you're ignoring me, let me take this perfect opportunity to express my gratitude. Thank you.

I've been thinking a lot about since that day. There isn't a single day that goes by that I don't think about it.
[A pleased mew mingles with the distant sound of the Evolver being loaded with a live round.]
About how I should repay you for all your kindness, I mean.
